10. The Blood Falls in Antarctica

Antarctica is the frigidest place in the world. Blood Falls is an outflow of water that flows from the Taylor Glacier to the ice-covered West Lake Bonney surface in the McMurdo Dry Valleys Taylor Valley in Victoria Land, East Antarctica. The reddish falls were first discovered by the Australian geologist Griffith Taylor in Antarctica in 1911, where he found that a river had stained deep red ice on the surrounding mountain. He had previously believed that this was due to algae discoloring the water, but that theory was never confirmed.

It was the longstanding mystery surrounding Blood Falls in Antarctica. Now this mystery has finally been solved, thanks to research by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The true origin of the deep red coloring of the Blood Falls is due to oxidized iron in saltwater brine, the same process that gives a dark red color to iron when it rusts. When the iron-bearing saltwater comes into contact with oxygen, the iron oxidizes and takes on a red colour, causing the water to die to a deep red colour.
